FOUNDATION YEAR for secondary school graduates is an intensive, highly interactive online study programme aimed at improving language skills, as well as preparing candidates wishing to study in English at the University of Warsaw.
The aim of the programme is to enable international students to start degree studies in English in a chosen field of social studies, humanities or science at the University of Warsaw. The entry requirement is possessing English language skills equivalent to at least B1 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, assessed on the basis of the B1 certificate (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL) or the UW placement test and online interview.
This is a specially designed, full-time, intensive one-year programme offering 450 hours of English, combining face-to-face instruction in the form of synchronous online sessions with asynchronous online support on the Moodle platform. In addition to English classes, the course consists of 120 hours of Polish for beginners.
The different course components promote learner autonomy, develop academic skills and critical thinking, as well as enhance cultural awareness and knowledge in an innovative way. The course aims at creating an inclusive learning space for students with various knowledge systems and diverse ethnic, academic, and linguistic backgrounds.
The Foundation Year Programme lasts 9 months – from 11th October 2021 to 6th June 2022 – and is divided into two semesters. The first semester focuses on English for academic and specific purposes. All four language skills are practiced. Moreover, the programme offers Social Path module thanks to which participants can become acquainted with Polish culture, academic life, the University facilities and its surroundings.
In the second semester, in addition to English and Polish classes, specific degree courses run by field specialists are introduced, if a group of candidates applying for studies in the similar field counts at least 5 persons.
Polish Language Course is held from the beginning of the Foundation Year Programme.
It focuses on basic communication in Polish to help students blend in and socialize during their future stay in Poland. We offer 120 hours of a specially designed online course of Polish language, based on blended learning techniques that include both face-to-face meetings and access to the asynchronous virtual materials, supporting the process of learning. During the classes, students not only develop basic communication skills (Polish vocabulary, grammar), but also have a chance to become familiar with their future environment.
Participants who successfully complete the Foundation Year shall be admitted to chosen first- or second-cycle studies by the Rector of the University of Warsaw.
Currently there are 16 study programmes offered in English.
Participants who possess Bachelor or Master’s degree and wish to apply for second-cycle studies shall be admitted to the chosen programme.
