November 17th 2022 International Student Day

Dear Students,

November 17 marks International Student Day.

On this occasion, we extend our warmest wishes to you that your time as a student is a period of inspiring activities, development of knowledge and passions!

The (tragic) history behind this special day

International Students’ Day is celebrated on the initiative of the European Students’ Council. It is an interdisciplinary student organization with more than 13,000 members from all over Europe and operates in more than 260 academic cities in 42 countries. Its goal is to promote the idea of a common Europe among young people. There are as many as 13 units in Poland, one of which is located in Warsaw. It is one of the first branches of the association in Central and Eastern Europe.

It was in this part of Europe, in 1939, that students in Prague took to the streets to protest the Nazi incursion. The demonstration was bloodily suppressed, with many students killed and 1,200 sent to concentration camps. Two years after the tragic events, November 17 was established as International Student Day.
