Live with Vice-Rector prof. Sławomir Żółtek – summary

 

On 22nd February, the summer semester began at the University of Warsaw. Will classroom classes be conducted only remotely? Can the mode of conducting classes change during the semester? These questions were answered during the online meeting by prof. Sławomir Żółtek, University of Warsaw Vice-Rector for Students and Quality of Teaching.

On the first day of the new semester, prof. Sławomir Żółtek met online with students on the profile of the University of Warsaw on Facebook. During the meeting, issues concerning, among others, organization of education in the beginning of the summer semester, available forms of social support and the possibility of obtaining psychological help. Prof. Żółtek answered the questions previously asked using the form and explained the issues raised in the chat during the broadcast.

 

Organization of classes in the summer semester

The mode of organization of education in the summer semester 2020/2021 is specified in the ordinance of the Rector of the University of Warsaw of January 18, 2021. According to the ordinance, classes will be held remotely, except for practical classes, which may take place on a full-time basis. – It is indicated in the ordinance that education, as a rule, takes place remotely. Stationary education is possible only in the case of practical classes, i.e. those whose learning outcomes cannot be obtained remotely – said prof. Sławomir Żółtek.

The decision whether or not the practical classes in the summer semester will be held in a full-time mode, according to the ordinance, rests with the heads of educational units.

Distance learning and the pandemic situation

Prof. Żółtek also referred to an issue that is often asked by students – whether the remote mode of conducting classes may be changed during the semester to full-time or hybrid mode. The Vice-Rector emphasized that there was such a possibility, but only in the event of a significant improvement in the pandemic situation and after carrying out, in advance, consultations with students and heads of teaching units. This decision would have to be introduced on the basis of the order of the Rector of the University of Warsaw.

The Vice-Rector also answered the question whether the return to full-time classes for students may in the future be conditioned by vaccination against COVID-19. He stressed that such a possibility is not currently being considered. However, the University will adapt its activities to any national regulations.

Social matters

During the meeting, social issues concerning both Polish and international students were also discussed. Prof. Żółtek reminded that, as before, University of Warsaw students can benefit from financial assistance, including social scholarships and allowances. He encouraged the submission of applications. Psychological support

During the meeting, the Vice-Rector also emphasized that students who need psychological support in a difficult situation related to the pandemic will find appropriate help at the University of Warsaw. Free psychological consultations are provided by the Psychological Counselling Centre of the University of Warsaw. Support is also offered by the Office for Persons with Disabilities, which may, inter alia, indicate directions for seeking further specialist advice.
